    ENG.  (...) At first sight, Valentin van der Meulen’s work can refer to a mimetic search, it is not. Truly, it focuses on the representation, in the first sense of the term, that is, a “presentification”: the incarnation of an image made present – and therefore sensitive – by plastic intervention, and passed through the filter of memory. Once in shape, it is entrusted to others and passes from memory to memory: it is alive!

These considerations are of a great banality and could be used to define any work of art, of any form, but to recall them here is anything but insignificant as they support Valentin van der Meulen’s work, are the intimate and deep base. Indeed, once his drawings are made, the artist endeavors to alter them, in various ways, between erasure, recovery and repetition, so much so that he blurs the subject: the performative action leaves indelible traces, as much evidence that the image was digested before being spit out, that what we see is in fact the memory of an image, which itself became an image that in us will become memory again.     FRA. (...) À première vue, les œuvres de Valentin van der Meulen peuvent renvoyer à une recherche mimétique, il n’en est rien. Véritablement, il s’attache à la représentation, dans le sens premier du terme, c’est à dire une « présentification » : l’incarnation d’une image rendue présente – et donc sensible – par intervention plastique, et passée au filtre de la mémoire. Une fois mise en forme, elle est confiée aux autres et passe ainsi de mémoire en mémoire : elle est vivante !

Ces considérations sont d’une grande banalité et pourraient servir à définir n’importe quelle œuvre d’art, de n’importe quelle forme, mais les rappeler ici est tout sauf anodin tant elles soutiennent de travail de Valentin van der Meulen, en sont le socle intime et profond. En effet, une fois ses dessins réalisés, l’artiste s’attache à les altérer, de diverses manières, entre effacement, recouvrement et répétition, si bien qu’il en brouille le sujet : l’action performative laisse des traces indélébiles, autant de preuves que l’image a été digérée avant d’être recrachée, que ce que nous voyons est en fait la mémoire d’une image, elle-même devenue image qui en nous redeviendra mémoire.
