For his second exhibition at Strouk
Gallery, Valentin van der Meulen has chosen the title "Non-Lieux"
(i.e. Non-places), in reference to Marc Augé’s book. The ethnologist and
anthropologist associated this concept with "supermodernity", as the
overabundance of events and space and the individualization of references. A
rereading even more relevant when the artist shows previously unseen works,
produced after choosing photos from the avalanche of images available on the
Internet, staging a new form of showbiz society.
By dint of being reproduced, standardized, then stripped of its original context, do image acquire another status? If it has long since lost its sole function of representation, what has it acquired in exchange? The infinite space of projection, which sometimes renders it abstract even when an element appears in it, is a way for Valentin van der Meulen to extend his reflection on non-places. Its spatial dimension is growing, particularly with the advent of virtual reality and other artificial intelligences, even though he is exploring this subject further through drawing, which he gives a pictorial and sculptural status to. The work begins with the choice of an online subject, one of the themes of which could be summed up here as heroes missing out on history.
(...) The artist does not deny a desire to make a statement, which is accentuated by a display reminiscent of billboards. While expanding his medium towards the object and the installation, he takes the liberty of giving his work a more committed character. A bit like make-up or masking, which allows to conceal and then display true intentions. He activates his message. He enters into a form of fluidity of gesture and thought, drawing parallels with the uninterrupted flow of our computers. Although he has now completely freed himself from the influence of any potential masters, he always comes back to this fundamental question: “What does it mean to draw a subject?” So, in the end, after looking at these representations with their strong fictional power, whose primary use has been erased, a softened and, perhaps, sentimentalized reading of these forgotten and transformed stories emerges (...)

FRA. (...) Pour sa deuxième exposition à la Galerie Strouk, Valentin van der Meulen a choisi le titre de « Non-lieux », en référence à Marc Augé. L’ethnologue et anthropologue associait ce concept à la « surmodernité », soit la surabondance événementielle, spatiale et l’individualisation des références. Une relecture d’autant plus pertinente quand l’artiste donne à voir des œuvres inédites, produites après avoir choisi des clichés dans l’avalanche d’images disponibles sur internet, remettant en scène une nouvelle forme de société du spectacle.
A force d’être reproduite, standardisée, puis déshabillée de son contexte d’origine, l’image acquêterait-elle un autre statut ? Si elle a perdu depuis longtemps sa seule fonction de représentation, qu’a-t-elle acquis en échange ? Espace de projection infini, qui la rend parfois abstraite même quand un élément y figure, elle prolonge pour Valentin van der Meulen, cette réflexion sur les non-lieux. Elle gagne en dimension spatiale, notamment depuis l’arrivée des réalités virtuelles et autres intelligences artificielles, même s’il creuse ce propos avec le dessin, à qui il confère un statut d’ordre pictural et sculptural. Le travail commence par le choix du sujet en ligne, dont l’un des thèmes pourrait se résumer ici aux héros passés à côté de l’histoire.
(...) L’artiste ne nie pas une volonté de revendication, qui est accentuée par un accrochage évoquant les panneaux d’affichage. Tout en expansant son médium vers l’objet et l’installation, il prend la liberté pour donner un caractère plus engagé à son travail. Un peu à la manière du maquillage ou du masquage qui permet de dissimuler, puis d’afficher de véritables intentions. Il active son message. Il rentre dans une forme de fluidité du geste et de la pensée et fait le parallèle avec les flux ininterrompus de nos ordinateurs. S’il s’est aujourd’hui totalement dégagé d’une quelconque influence de maîtres potentiels, il revient toujours à cette question fondamentale : « Que signifie dessiner un sujet ? ». Alors à la fin, après avoir regardé ces représentations au fort pouvoir fictionnel, dont l’usage premier a été effacé, il s’en dégage une lecture adoucie et, peut-être, sentimentalisée de ces histoires oubliées et transformées (…)
